Action Rigging Adventures
Gavin Smith
Aero Motion Australia has worked around the world on some pretty fantastic feature films, theatre and circus productions. Here we take a look behind the scenes at how we get to design and build the rig's that we get to perform on.
Back in the 1990s, we travelled over to Thailand to work on The Phantom Feature Film as part of a fantastic team of stunt, special effects and rigging technicians. Our mission to construct a bridge that augmented its geometry for the hero to make a daring rescue in a runaway truck that was a fantastic experience. This project took over six weeks of work for literally minutes of screen time. The skills and knowledge gained from this project gave us plenty to think about for the next one.
In the early 2000's we were engaged in some of the most progressive and innovative film productions of the time. The Matrix, Mission Impossible 2, Star Wars Ep. 3, Moulin Rouge, are just a few of the films that we worked on as a stunt performer and stunt rigging designer.
Over at our circus and theatre space in Sydney Australia, The Aerial Lab we got to train and rehearse for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games Ceremonies and design the rigging system and train the artists for the Legs on the Wall production, Homelands. as well as our International touring with Erth and more recently with Bandaloop.
During our time as a physical performer and rigger, we've travelled extensively to more than a dozen countries and worked with some incredible individuals.
